What is a good download speed for an office?

What upload speed do I need for video calls?
For stable video conferencing (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet), at least 5 Mbps upload per concurrent call is recommended. Group calls or screen sharing require 10 Mbps or more. Asymmetric plans with low upload speeds are a common cause of poor call quality.
What causes slow internet speed?
Common causes include: network congestion during peak hours, outdated or overloaded router, Wi-Fi interference from neighboring networks, too many devices sharing bandwidth, ISP throttling, poor-quality cabling, or distance from the exchange. What is ping (latency) and why does it matter?
Ping measures the round-trip time for a data packet in milliseconds (ms). Lower ping means faster response. Under 20 ms is excellent; 20–50 ms is good for most applications; over 100 ms causes noticeable lag in video calls, VoIP, and real-time applications. High ping is often caused by network congestion or long routing paths.
What is jitter and how does it affect my connection?
Jitter is the variation in ping response times across multiple measurements. Consistent low jitter (under 10 ms) means a stable connection. High jitter (30 ms+) causes choppy audio, frozen video frames, and packet loss during calls. Jitter is especially noticeable on Wi-Fi or congested shared networks.
Why is Wi-Fi slower than a wired connection?
Wi-Fi signals are degraded by physical obstacles (walls, floors), electromagnetic interference from other devices, distance from the router, and channel congestion from neighboring networks. A wired Ethernet connection always provides more stable and accurate speed test results. For offices requiring consistent performance, wired structured cabling is strongly recommended.
Why is my actual speed lower than my subscribed plan?
ISPs advertise "up to" maximum speeds under ideal conditions. Actual speeds vary based on: time-of-day congestion, router and modem performance, number of active users on the shared segment, quality of in-building cabling, and the distance/medium between your device and the ISP's node. Shared broadband plans are particularly susceptible to speed drops during peak hours.
How can I improve a slow internet connection?
Try these steps: (1) Restart your router and modem. (2) Switch from Wi-Fi to a wired Ethernet connection. (3) Stop large background downloads or updates. (4) Update router firmware. What is the difference between download and upload speed?
Download speed determines how fast you receive data — affecting web browsing, video streaming, file downloads, and software updates. Upload speed determines how fast you send data — critical for video calls, file sharing, cloud backup, and remote desktop. Most broadband plans are asymmetric: faster download than upload.
